How GeneticPlace works

From lot to completed sale, for buyers and sellers

In short

GeneticPlace brings Dutch breeders and buyers of cattle genetics together. A breeder lists an animal, a stud bull or embryos with the details that matter in this trade. A buyer finds that listing, compares and buys. The platform mediates and charges the buyer a commission for that; buyer and seller settle the purchase price of the animal between them.

What it costs

  • Seller: free. Listing costs nothing, not even when the animal sells.
  • Buyer: 5% buyer commission on the purchase price. That is the only amount that goes through GeneticPlace.
  • The purchase price itself you pay directly to the seller, outside the platform. We never hold the purchase price.

Some sellers have a different rate; what you pay is always on screen before you confirm, and on the invoice you receive afterwards.

Buying, step by step

  1. Search and compare. Filter by type of animal, breed and province. Every lot shows the maternal line up to three generations back, the production figures of its ancestors, the herd's health status and the breeding values.
  2. Ask your question. Every lot has a public questions section. The seller is notified and the answer is immediately visible to others who are interested.
  3. Buy or bid. At a fixed price you buy straight away, or you make an offer the seller can counter. In an auction you place a bid.
  4. Settle the commission. Once the lot is awarded to you, you pay the buyer commission through Mollie, with the payment method you pick there. You receive an invoice for it.
  5. Make arrangements with the seller. As soon as the commission is paid, a private conversation opens between you. There you arrange payment of the purchase price, any inspection and transport.

How an auction runs

Auctions run on the last Friday of the month, between 20:00 and 22:00 Dutch time. Outside that round, lots are listed at a fixed price or announced as an upcoming auction.

  • You can set a maximum bid. The system then bids on your behalf up to that amount, in the fixed steps that belong to the price level.
  • A bid in the final minutes automatically extends the auction. That way nobody can snatch it at the last second without you getting a chance to respond.
  • A seller can set a minimum price. If it is not reached, there is no sale.
  • If there is also a buy-now price, you can skip the auction as long as the highest bid is still below it.

Selling, step by step

  1. Sign up as a seller through the seller page. We check your business details and trade register number before your profile goes live.
  2. List your lot. At least three photos, plus the pedigree, the health status and the breeding values. The more complete it is, the more serious the questions you get.
  3. Choose how you sell: a fixed price, or an auction in the next round. At a fixed price you can accept incoming offers, decline them or make a counter-offer.
  4. Finish up with the buyer. As soon as the buyer has paid the commission, the conversation opens and you make arrangements about payment, inspection and transport.

What we do and do not do

We check sellers before they are allowed to list anything, and we assess uploaded health declarations before the matching label appears. If something goes wrong between buyer and seller, we mediate.

We are not a party to the sale itself and give no guarantee on the animal. Exactly what you can expect is set out on buyer protection, and the full agreement in the terms and conditions.
